Treatment · Cosmetic Dentistry
Considered changes, planned with you.
Cosmetic dentistry covers treatments that change the appearance of teeth: their shade, shape, alignment or balance. We start with what you’d like to change and whether it’s right for your teeth, then plan carefully together.
- Often includes
- Whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns and aligner treatment
- Who it’s for
- Patients with healthy teeth and gums who want to change how their smile looks
- First step
- A cosmetic consultation and a check of your oral health
Overview
Starting with a conversation
A good cosmetic plan begins with listening. Your dentist will ask what you notice when you smile, what you would like to change, and what matters most to you, whether that’s colour, shape, spacing or symmetry.
Before any cosmetic work, your teeth and gums need to be healthy. If something else needs treating first, we’ll say so. We then talk through the options that may suit you, including conservative ones, with their benefits, limitations and costs.
Results vary from person to person, and some treatments are not reversible. You’ll have time to think, ask questions and decide without any pressure.
Why patients enquire
Why patients ask about cosmetic dentistry
- Discoloured teeth Staining or darkening that cleaning alone hasn’t changed.
- Chips and wear Edges that have chipped or worn down over time.
- Gaps or crowding Spaces or overlapping teeth that bother you.
- Uneven shapes Teeth that look a different size or length from their neighbours.
- Old restorations Fillings or crowns that no longer match.
- An upcoming occasion Planning ahead for an event. Timing is discussed honestly.
The process
What it generally involves
Every plan is individual. This is the usual shape of treatment; your dentist will explain exactly what applies to you.
01
Consultation
We discuss your goals and check your teeth and gums.
02
Records
Photographs or scans may be taken to help plan and explain options.
03
Options and costs
A written plan sets out what each option involves, its limitations and its cost.
04
Treatment and review
Treatment goes ahead only once you’ve agreed, followed by a review of how things look and feel.
Is it right for me?
Cosmetic treatment is not suitable for everyone, and outcomes differ between patients. A qualified dentist needs to assess your teeth before recommending anything.
Questions
Questions about cosmetic dentistry
Can’t see your question? Call the practice and speak to someone who can help, or browse all FAQs.
Which cosmetic treatment is best?
There’s no single answer. It depends on your teeth, your goals and your oral health. Your dentist will explain the options that may suit you, including simpler ones.
Is cosmetic treatment permanent?
Some treatments are reversible and some are not. Many also need maintenance or replacement over time. This is explained clearly before you decide.
Can I see what the result might look like?
Your dentist may use photographs, scans or models to explain a proposed change, but these are planning aids, not guarantees.
Will I be pressured into treatment?
No. You’ll receive a written plan and can take as long as you need to decide. Choosing to do nothing is always an option.
